*Sara Fredericks opened her first small dress shop on Newbury Street in Boston in 1934, and by the 1950s was traveling to Europe twice a year as well as to New York and California to source her stock. Her shops carried some of the most celebrated names in American and European fashion, including Pauline Trigre, Geoffrey Beene, James Galanos, Bill Blass, Oscar de la Renta, Bob Mackie, and Hubert de Givenchy, as well as Chanel and Chlo. She also commissioned designers, including Richard Tam and Ferdinand Sarmi, to create pieces under her own label. At her peak, Fredericks operated branches in luxury hotels and upscale resort towns, expanding to ten shops by 1967. She sold the salons in 1983 but remained president until her death in 1986, and the company closed in 1993.
